Three times a charm -- or avoiding the "pat down"

It was a frosty morning, with a full moon shining down, as we headed towards Dulles Airport to board our 6:00 AM flight to Cabo. We knew that traveling over the holidays might be impacted by increased airport security, but little did we know that Joan would become the "center of attention" for the day.

As we cleared the various security checkpoints, all was going swimmingly well. Tomba had advised his traveling partner that she should not wear any jewelry, belts, wire mesh underwear, or other things that might trigger the screening devices. So, as she entered the archway of the screening device, the alarm beeped and she was advised by the TSA officer to remove her watch, which she did. Then she tried again and the second beep occurred -- and she said, "I have nothing else on." Then Tomba looked up and said -- earrings! Joan removed the earrings and got ready to re-try. Then we realized what was happening. We looked around and saw several TSA screeners and a couple of passengers lining up to do the "full body scan and pat down" on Joan, so Tomba said a prayer and as Joan cleared the screening device for the third time, there was no "beep" -- success, we were through, much to the displeasure of the anxiously awaiting crowd.
